This week however the 285th ranked player in the world has a two shot lead over 38 year old David Mathis heading into the weekend at the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio.

“If you see me stressing it’s probably over nothing, too. I usually sweat the small stuff and the big stuff I don’t really worry about.

Curtis, who has won a total of three events on the PGA Tour, is playing without full status in 2012 for the first time Callaway Razr X Tour irons since his victory at Royal St Georges and is finding it quite an adjustment.

“Hopefully I can go out there and win and take care of business. But, you know, it’s a little bit more different. You got to adjust to it, you know, mentally but just been — when I’ve been home, trying to practice as much as I can. If I get the call, the Thursday, Friday before, I’m ready to go.”

“But, yeah, you know, just I think being at home, being relaxed, being around people, you know, family, friends that you want to be around make you feel that way is the easiest thing you can do and everybody knows me, knows that I don’t stress about much.

Mathis has yet to win on the PGA Tour but has won twice on the Nationwide Tour. He has however missed ten of eleven cuts this season so his form turnaround is quite startling. He has also missed Ping G20 fairway wood the cut on both previous times to this event so this week is providing hope for him to date.

When asked how he is coping with the transition in status he responded; "I just listen to my wife every day, “It will be fine, it will be fine.” Then you got two young kids running around the house that don’t have a care in the world. So that makes it easier “laughter”.

“Well, I mean, you know, every other year played — since ’03, you know, pretty much had it laid out before the year started and — but this year, you know, the status that I have, I went to Europe for three weeks early in the year, played over there and then just tried to get in some discount golf clubs events over here, you know. Hopefully get in a few more after this week.

First round leader, Matt Every, had two holes to play when darkness brought a halt to proceedings leaving a round 25 players required to finish their second rounds tomorrow. Every was in a share of third position at 7 under and three from the lead.
